Self Employed Health Insurance

Get free self-employed health insurance quotes and find information on the health plans and coverage options available to you.  Your future is what matters most to you and we can help you get the coverage you and your family need.

Self-employed health insurance plans are designed for people who are independent contractors or use the tax form 1099, are self-employed or own a small business.  There are several different types of health plans for your consideration, including PPO, HMO, Network, Indemnity, and more.

Tax Preferred Health Savings Accounts

Some plans have significant tax advantages and offer long-term savings that can work toward your retirement – a helpful benefit when you’re self-employed.  Called Health Savings Accounts (HSA), these plans allow you to write off most health related expenses and let you save money in a tax-free savings account.

Health Savings Accounts work like this:  You become insured under an HSA eligible high-deductible health plan (usually a PPO or Preferred Provider Organization) and open a health savings account at your bank.  You pay a lower monthly premium to your health insurance company while also funding your bank HSA.  You can use the money in your HSA to pay for almost any healthcare related expense, including doctor’s visits, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter headache medicine.

The money you deposit into your HSA doesn’t get taxed and the money you withdraw to pay for health related expenses doesn’t get taxed either.  Best of all, any funds in your HSA account that you don’t use continue to grow tax-free and can be used toward your retirement like a 401k.

Maternity Coverage Considerations

When you’re self-employed, finding a health insurance plan that provides you with maximum benefits at minimum cost is a good thing.  However, one thing to keep in mind is that most self-employed health insurance plans typically do not come with maternity coverage.  This is true for most health plan types except HMOs.  If maternity coverage is a benefit you and your family need, please consider an HMO or a hybrid-POS that comes with maternity.
