Top 5 Health Insurance Myths
- Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
- Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
- Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
- Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
- Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Michigan Health Insurance 101
More than 9 million residents consider Michigan home. On average, each household earns $49,394 annually.
While many Michiganders obtain employer health insurance through work, a dramatic 379,000 of your neighbors independently buy individual health insurance directly from Michigan health insurance providers – and perhaps for good reason!
Cost is certainly a factor when you compare employer based health insurance and those obtained on the individual market. For example, in 2004, Michiganders with employer health insurance paid $667 for individual coverage and $2,405 for their families. In dramatic contrast, independent health insurance obtained by individuals through the Michigan health insurance providers was only $112 and $358 for individuals and families, respectively.
Is it any surprise that Michiganders are turning towards affordable individual health insurance? At InsureMonkey, we don’t find that surprising – which is why we are ready to help you find the right coverage as your friendly health insurance agent.
Michigan Health Insurance Providers
Michigan’s Uninsured
More than 1,000,000 Michiganders find themselves uninsured. Even though some are employed, their jobs may not provide employer insurance. Others are entrepreneurs that have not yet secured self employment health insurance. And sadly, many Michiganders without insurance may simply be unemployed due to dramatic layoffs in Motor City. Whatever the case, know that the situation is temporary, and with InsureMonkey’s help, you can still obtain affordable individual health insurance.
Michigan SCHIP
Children of low and middle income families can secure health insurance through Michigan’s SCHIP program, which is administered as the MDCH.
If your household income falls within the 100% and 200% range of the federal poverty level, then your child could qualify for free health insurance, inclusive of dental, vision, mental health, hospital, and regular checkup care. More than 43,375 children already enjoy these benefits through the Michigan SCHIP program.
