Top 5 Health Insurance Myths

  1. Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
  2. Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
  3. Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
  4. Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
  5. Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Did You Know?

Most of today's self-employed entrepreneurs are covered with individual health insurance plans. Why? Because they get the benefits they need at a fraction of the cost. And we all like to save money!

Kentucky Health Insurance 101

Kentucky is the beautiful home to more than four million residents, whose households earn, on average, an annual salary of $39,678.  Most of your Kentucky neighbors receive health insurance through their job.  Nonetheless, another 171,941 Kentucky Derby enthusiasts buy individual health insurance policies directly from Kentucky health insurance providers.

As a Kentuckian, if you opt for employer insurance, you typically pay $682 for individual coverage and $2,466 for family health insurance plans each month.  This is in large contrast to your neighbors who directly buy their own individual health insurance policies.  These Kentuckians pay only $125 for an individual and $413 for a family of four, based upon 2004 figures.

Clearly, there is a disparity in cost between employer health insurance and individual health insurance policies purchased directly from Kentucky health insurance providers. Nonetheless, even for those Kentuckians who work for an employer, only 58% of private corporations offer health insurance coverage.  When it comes to small business health insurance, only 42% of companies that employ 50 workers or less provide coverage.

Subsequently, we here at InsureMonkey are not surprised by the number of good Kentuckians who seek out individual health insurance – with our help as the friendly neighborhood health insurance agent, that is.

Kentucky’s High Risk Pool

Some of your Kentuckian kin may be deemed “too risky” to insure in the eyes of health insurance providers.  Thankfully, the state legislature has created a high risk pool that will allow those Kentuckians who have serious and pre-existing medical conditions to receive health insurance coverage. 3,947 Kentuckians are currently enrolled in the program, and they pay between $632 and $819, with the state being responsible for any other outstanding health insurance expenses.

If you or a loved one has been rejected for your pre-existing medical conditions by the Kentucky health insurance providers, contact Kentucky Access at (502) 573-1026 today.

Kentucky’s Uninsured

In Kentucky, an unfortunate 604,929 residents do not have any health insurance policy.  You will find that some work for companies that simply don’t offer employer health insurance, and others will admit that they are entrepreneurs who simply aren’t sure if they can afford self employed health insurance.  Still others have been laid off in a difficult economy.  Whatever the situation, know that you are not alone, and that better healthcare is just on the horizon.  InsureMonkey, as your health insurance agent, can help you access the health insurance in Kentucky that you need.

Kentucky SCHIP

Kentucky operates a SCHIP program to help uninsured children from low income households receive health insurance – but not enough children take advantage of the program.  While there are 52,536 currently enrolled, according to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, more than 67,000 children technically qualify for Kentucky’s SCHIP, but have not enrolled in the program!

If your household falls within the low to middle income range, name 200% of the current federal poverty level, then your children may qualify for health insurance through SCHIP.  As an example, if your household consists of four members, but your income is $42,000 annually or less, then your child can partake in the Kentucky SCHIP program.

•    Children
o    Infants Ages 0-1:  $32,560 or 185% of the Federal Poverty Level
o    Children Ages 1-5:  $26,400 or 150% of the Federal Poverty Level
