Top 5 Health Insurance Myths
- Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
- Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
- Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
- Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
- Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Iowa Health Insurance 101
More than 2.9 million residents call Iowa home sweet home. On average, each household earns an annual income of $49,262. Most Iowans you find obtain healthcare through employer health insurance, but 167,032 of your neighbors purchase individual health insurance on their own, directly through a Iowa health insurance provider.
As an Iowan, you pay $783 and $2,638, respectively, for individual and family health insurance plans obtained through your work. In contrast, if you obtain health insurance plans on the individual market, you expected to pay $103 for individual health insurance and $398 for family health insurance each month in 2004.
In reviewing this data, it is clear that Iowans who obtain individual health insurance save more money each month in contrast to those who obtain employer health insurance. In any case, only 52% of corporations in Iowa offer employer health insurance plans, and an even smaller 39% of businesses employing 50 workers or less provide small business health insurance plans. Unsurprisingly, more and more Iowans are setting out on their own to obtain individual health insurance – with help from their friendly Iowa health insurance agent, InsureMonkey.
Iowa Health Insurance Providers
Iowa’s High Risk Pool
In Iowa, people who are rejected from health insurance providers due to serious or pre-existing medical conditions can join a “high risk pool,” which is partially subsidized by state support. If you cannot obtain health insurance on your own, consider joining the 2,133 Iowans who are already part of the pool.
Iowans in the high risk pool are only responsible for paying $226 and $472 per month for health insurance, while the state bears the responsibility for the outstanding expenses.
For those who have been declined health insurance because of pre-existing conditions, contact the Iowa Comprehensive Health Association at (317) 614-2133 to see if you qualify for the high risk pool.
Iowa’s Uninsured
291,009 of you and your neighbors do not have health insurance in Iowa due to a myriad of reasons, including a need for self employed health insurance, unemployment, or perhaps employment with a company that does not offer affordable health insurance. Hope is just around the corner, as all of these circumstances are temporary. InsureMonkey is here to help you find effective, affordable health insurance solutions wherever you live in Iowa.
Iowa SCHIP
Iowa’s SCHIP, also called hawk-I healthcare, currently provides 33,000 uninsured children the benefit of healthcare. For low income and working families, hawk-I can be a great way to help your children enjoy individual health insurance.
To qualify, children must be younger than 19 years old and currently uninsured. Depending upon the parents’ income level, you may pay nothing for coverage each month or perhaps a $10 or $20 nominal fee.
There are also maximum income requirements that depend upon the number of individuals in your family. With more members in your family, the greater income the household can earn. In addition, 20% of the household’s earned income is automatically deducted and does not count towards the income limits.
To see if your family’s income qualifies, and to obtain more information, please contact Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa (Hawk-i) at (800) 257-8563 or click http://www.hawk-i.org/en_US/index.html.
