Top 5 Health Insurance Myths
- Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
- Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
- Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
- Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
- Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Indiana Health Insurance 101
Indiana is home to more than six million residents. On average, Indianans earn an annual salary of $46,407. While the majority of Indianans obtain employer health insurance through your workplace, there are nearly 250,000 of your neighbors who opt to buy individual health insurance directly through Indiana’s health insurance providers.
In 2004, Indiana employees who purchased group insurance through work were responsible for a monthly premium of $838 for individual health insurance, while family coverage for four was a hefty $2,634. In contrast, residents who purchased individual health insurance straight from the insurance carriers paid $125 for an individual and $506 for family health insurance.
Based upon these figures, there is a large discrepancy between premiums on the individual and employer-based group market. In addition, not all employers even offer health insurance to their workers. In Indiana, only 53% of private corporations even give their workers employer health insurance. Furthermore, only 34% of businesses that employ less than 50 workers provide small business health insurance. Subsequently, it is unsurprising the Indianans turn to individual health insurance on their own. However, with InsureMonkey as their health insurance agent, they are certainly not alone.
Indiana Health Insurance Providers
Indiana’s High Risk Pool
Sadly, many individuals who have pre-existing and serious medical conditions are labeled “high risk” by health insurance providers, and subsequently, they are unable to obtain individual health insurance. Thankfully, Indiana’s state government sponsors a high risk pool helps these people to secure affordable healthcare insurance. Individuals in the pool pay between $510 and $763 per month, and the government subsidizes the rest. Approximately 7,050 Indianans benefit from the state’s high risk pool.
If you have pre-existing medical conditions that prohibit you from obtaining individual health insurance, contact the Indiana Comprehensive Health Insurance Association at (317) 614-2133.
Indiana’s Uninsured
In Indiana, 732,256 of your neighbors don’t have health insurance. Not all are unemployed or entrepreneurs who simply cannot afford self employed health insurance. Rather, many work for corporations that do not offer employer health insurance. Affordable health insurance should be a right for all Indianans, and we know that these situations are simply temporary. InsureMonkey wants to help you obtain affordable health insurance. If you, a loved one, a friend or neighbor need healthcare coverage, we are here to help as your Indiana health insurance agent.
