Top 5 Health Insurance Myths

  1. Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
  2. Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
  3. Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
  4. Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
  5. Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Did You Know?

Most of today's self-employed entrepreneurs are covered with individual health insurance plans. Why? Because they get the benefits they need at a fraction of the cost. And we all like to save money!

Illinois Health Insurance 101

Illinois is home to more than 12 million residents, who earn an annual household income of about $51,320.  Most Illinoisans enjoy employer health insurance from work, but approximately 560,000 of you secure individual health insurance plans directly through Illinois health insurance providers.

Based upon 2004 figures, residents who secured insurance directly from the health insurance companies paid $140 for an individual healthcare plan and $348 for family health insurance plans each month.  In contrast, employees who purchased insurance through their workplace paid $807 for individuals and $2,710 for families each month.

These figures clearly reveal that obtaining individual health insurance directly through Illinois carriers can be much more affordable than employer health insurance. In addition, only 55% of private Illinois corporations offer employer health insurance, and a mere 41% of companies with less than 50 employees provide small business health insurance.  Subsequently, more and more Illinois residents find themselves in pursuit of affordable individual health insurance, with help from InsureMonkey, of course!

Illinois’s High Risk Pool

Illinois’ government has created a high-risk pool that helps people with serious or pre-existing medical insurance obtain coverage.  Typically, these individuals cannot obtain individual health insurance due to their “high risk” in the eyes of the health insurance providers.  Subsequently, in Illinois, you can join the pool of 16,000 already enjoying the benefit.

Those in Illinois’s high risk pool are responsible for paying $606 and $873 per month per person, and the state will pay for the outstanding costs beyond this range.

If an Illinois health insurance provider has rejected your application due to pre-existing conditions, you should see if you qualify to join the high-risk pool.  Contact the Illinois Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan at (217) 782-6333 or click http://www.chip.state.il.us/chip.htm.

Illinois’s Uninsured

Over 1,737,876 residents of Illinois do not have insurance.  Some of you may work for a corporation that does not have employer health insurance.  Others may be entrepreneurs that are not sure if they can afford self employed health insurance.  In this economy, still others may simply be unemployed.  Remember that these are temporary conditions, and with the assistance of InsureMonkey as your health insurance agent, we want to change your uninsured status.

It’s time to team up to minimize the number of uninsured individuals in Illinois.  Let anyone you know who does not have individual health insurance know about InsureMonkey.

Illinois SCHIP

Through state and federal funding, Illinois offers SCHIP to provide health insurance for uninsured children.  To qualify, the child’s parents must generate a total income that falls within 100% to 200% of the federal poverty rate.  In 2009, this equates to 17,170 and $34,340.  Currently, 175,145 children obtain the health insurance they deserve through Illinois’ SCHIP program.

To see if you and your child qualify for SCHIP, please contact Illinois All Kids at (866) 255-5437 or click http://www.allkidscovered.com/
