Top 5 Health Insurance Myths

  1. Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
  2. Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
  3. Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
  4. Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
  5. Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Did You Know?

Most of today's self-employed entrepreneurs are covered with individual health insurance plans. Why? Because they get the benefits they need at a fraction of the cost. And we all like to save money!

Florida Individual and Family Health Insurance

Find Florida health insurance plans in the following metropolitan areas: Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tallahassee and other locations.

Florida Health Insurance 101

The sunshine state of Florida has more than 18 million residents within its boundaries. Floridians typically earn an average annual income of about $46,142.  While many Floridians obtain employer health insurance, 950,809 Florida dwellers purchase it on their own directly through health insurance providers.

The standard cost of a regular co-pay policy on the individual market in 2006 was $148 for an individual and $586 for a family of four.  The standard cost of a regular co-pay policy on the group market in 2006 was $866 for individuals and $3,645 for family health insurance plans.

It is not widely known that health insurance can be more affordable on the individual market than on the group market.  It is also not widely known that only 51% of Florida’s private sector corporations offer an employer health insurance plan and only 39% of employers with 50 or less employees a small business health insurance plan. Consequently, it should not surprise you to learn that more people are getting affordable health insurance on the individual market. As a health insurance agent, InsureMonkey is here to help all of these people.

Florida’s High Risk Pool

People who find they are unable to get individual health insurance due to serious and ongoing medical problems can join Florida’s high risk pool. This pool is useful because the state will offset the high cost of coverage with a subsidy.  Approximately 367 Floridians are enrolled in the high risk pool.
If you’ve been declined coverage and want to see if you qualify to join the high-risk pool, please contact the Florida Comprehensive Health Association at (850) 309-1200.

Florida’s Uninsured

Florida has about 3,738,230 residents who do not have health insurance coverage. For many, it is because their work does not offer access to an employer health plan or a small business health insurance option. Others are entrepreneurs without self employed health insurance. Still more find it hard to get because they are unemployed or underemployed. The aim of InsureMonkey is to help everyone find affordable health insurance coverage.

Florida SCHIP

Children of parents who meet the family/household income requirement between 100% and 200% of the poverty rate qualify to obtain SCHIP. Approximately 224,000 Florida kids presently benefit from Florida’s SCHIP program.
