Top 5 Health Insurance Myths

  1. Myth: Individual health insurance benefits are not as good as employer benefits. Truth: Hogwash. Individual health insurance is often more benefit-rich than employer-based plans.
  2. Myth: It's a good idea to add my family to my company's plan and pay the cost of their benefits. Truth: For healthy families, buying individual health insurance for your dependents, instead of adding them to your company plan, can save you up to 75% or more per month for the same benefits.
  3. Myth: If I'm laid-off, COBRA is my best option. Truth: Before you sign, shop an individual health plan with the same benefits and don't be surprised to save hundreds of dollars per month.
  4. Myth: My company buys health insurance cheaper than I ever could. Truth: Your employer pays for all healthy and unhealthy employees. With individual health insurance, you pay for only what you need.
  5. Myth: I'm healthy, so I don't need health insurance. Truth: We all need health insurance. At some point in our lives, we will all have an accident, get injured, or get sick. And at that point, we need insurance. Problem is we can't plan for these things and playing the odds is not in our favor.

Did You Know?

Most of today's self-employed entrepreneurs are covered with individual health insurance plans. Why? Because they get the benefits they need at a fraction of the cost. And we all like to save money!

Colorado Health Insurance 101

Demographically speaking, there are more than 4.5 million residents in Colorado, and the typical family income is about $57,333.  Though the vast majority of Colorado residents receive employer health insurance coverage, an estimated 334,667 purchase individual health insurance plans on their own directly through Colorado health insurance providers.

The standard cost of a traditional co-pay policy on the individual market in 2006 was $148 for an individual and $460 for a family health insurance policy, while the standard cost on the group market for the same type of policy was $724 for individuals and $2,911 for families obtaining large or small business health insurance.

The cost of individual health insurance plans is significantly lower on the individual market than on the group (employer-based) market.  And, did you know that only 55% of Colorado’s private sector employers offer a health insurance plan?  Furthermore, did you know that only 43% of employers with 50 employees or less offer a small business health insurance plan?

Knowing this, it should be no surprise that many people are finding affordable health insurance directly through the Colorado health insurance providers.  This is the reason InsureMonkey is here as your health insurance agent: to help give you the details you need to find the best health coverage for you and your family.

Colorado’s Uninsured

Everyone wishes there were no uninsured people in the state, but unfortunately, there are over 813,188 Colorado residents who are uninsured.  Some may need self employed health insurance, while others may need temporary insurance as they are between jobs.  We want to substantially lower this number. If you are aware of anyone who is in need of health insurance, refer them to InsureMonkey.

Colorado SCHIP

Needy children in Colorado can benefit from the joint state and federal SCHIP program. SCHIP pays for the health insurance premiums for uninsured children of low-income parents.  The family/household income requirements for the parents of low-income kids must fall between 100% and 200% of the poverty rate.  In essence, this means that a family has to earn between $17,170 and $34,340 with uninsured children.  Colorado’s SCHIP presently helps 51,000 needy children.
