When you think about getting the heart pumping and the lungs working, what type of exercise comes to mind?  Most people think about a run through the neighborhood park or sweating it out on the treadmill at the gym. However, swimming is a wonderful cardiovascular workout that offers a host of other benefits as well.  There are three reasons to consider incorporating water exercise to your workout program.

Women's Swimming

A Healthy Heart

There is no doubt that swimming works the heart, which improves cardiovascular conditioning. Swimming allows you to build endurance, allowing you to increase blood flow and oxygen consumption at a steady pace. Swimming also works your lungs so you enjoy a stronger, healthier respiratory system.

With swimming, you can build fitness gradually, increasing cardiovascular function without stressing your heart in the process. This means that anyone can indulge in a regular swim, no matter what their age or fitness level.

A Full Body Workout

Swimming requires whole body conditioning, involving all of your muscles in the workout at the same time. Even people who have never done strength training before can enjoy toning and increased muscle mass from a regular swim. While you may not look like Charles Atlas after a few laps in the pool, you will certainly see an improvement in tone and strength. You may also see some muscle mass and definition, particularly in the back and shoulders, but also in the arms and legs. The focus of the muscle toning will depend in part on the strokes you choose.

A Program for all Ages

Swimming is a no impact sport, so you can enjoy your workouts well into your twilight years if you like. Joints and muscles are protected in the water, and thus, you don't have to worry about undue stress on your body. In fact, the Arthritis Foundation recommends swimming and other workouts to arthritis sufferers because it is an excellent way to keep joints in shape without causing injury. If you are injured through another type of activity, swimming is a great way to rehabilitate your body until you can get back on the running circuit.

Swimming is a great way to get in shape or stay in shape. Most swimmers find the water to be a relaxing place that allows them to work out at their own pace. Ready for a whole new level of fitness?  Dive right in!
